Catarina de Sousa
Filmmaker, journalist, and producer working in cinema and the visual arts.
In 2021, together with Isadora Neves Marques, she co-founded the film production company Foi Bonita a Festa, based in Porto, Portugal. She is the founder of Casa do Xisto, an artist residency dedicated to cinema and the visual arts, located in the village of Macieira de Rates, Barcelos, Portugal. As a filmmaker, she co-directed Tracing Utopia (2021) with Nick Tyson, produced at UnionDocs – Center for Documentary Art in New York, and premiered internationally at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
She is currently working on her first feature-length documentary, Quem és tu, Judite?, and on the virtual reality project A Revolução entra pelos olhos, with Lui Avallos. The latter was selected for CPH:LAB 2024, where it received the Sunny Side of the Doc Award at the Geneva International Film Market; it was also awarded XR Immersive Development at the New Images Festival 2025 in Paris and selected for the inaugural Immersive Market of the Cannes Film Festival in 2025.
In 2023, she took part in Berlinale Talents and was an Emerging Producer in the Match Me! programme at the Locarno Film Festival. In 2024, she presented part of her filmography—as producer, director, and initiator of films developed through the Casa do Xisto residency—within the Luas Novas programme at Batalha Centro de Cinema in Porto.
For television, she is the author of the documentary Verdade ou Consequência (2017), on the post-truth era, and produced Laureano Barros, Refúgio Rigoroso (2017) by Paulo Pinto; both projects were funded by RTP – Rádio e Televisão de Portugal.
